As long as you have a food processor you can pretty much make any kind of nut butter you want. I don’t think most people realize how many unnecessary ingredients are in commercially processed peanut butter. They put in all sorts of preservatives, sweeteners and extra oils. If you’ve never tried homemade nut butters like from the grinding machine at a natural foods store it’s so much better then the big brand stuff they sell everywhere. I also like to make Almond Butter and it’s the exact same process as the peanut butter but it just takes a while longer to process. You can change it up a little too by adding local honey or cinnamon or even dark chocolate chips are really good if you are in to that sort of thing. That’s the really nice thing about making the food you love homemade, you know exactly what’s in it, you can use whatever you want and it’s a lot cheaper too. My favorite way to eat it is just with a sliced apple for an afternoon snack or on toast for a Simple Breakfast.
- 3 Cups Peanuts (I used Organic & Raw for this batch but any kind you like will work)
- Salt to taste
Put peanuts in your food processor and process for about 2 minutes, stop and scrape down the sides and process again until it’s your desired consistency. Almond Butter takes quite a bit longer, about 10-15 minutes and you have to scrape down the side about every couple of minutes. I store them in a glass jar with a lid in the fridge and they will last quite a while.
