I’ve taken my son to the library once a week since he was really little for storytime and to check out books and movies to take home and every time we are there, without fail I check out cookbooks. It’s a great way to see what is out there, try out new recipes and get to know different chefs, cooks and bakers without spending any money. After I realized that I had checked out the Moosewood Restaurant Celebrates Cookbook about ten times over the course of a year or so I thought it was a pretty safe bet to buy. This is not necessarily a cookbook that I would normally buy, its vegetarian, holiday themed and there are zero photos but there is just something about it that I love and it’s turned out to be one of my favorites. Anytime I pick it up I see something new that looks really good. They have 12 different cookbooks all from The Moosewood Restaurant in Ithaca New York which opened in 1973 and I own 3 of them so far.
I was a vegetarian for a while about ten years ago and even though I’m not anymore I still cook and eat a lot of meat free dishes. It’s always a good idea to have some good veggie recipes in your collection, you never know when you’ll need them. This book is divided up by menus for the holidays and seasons so its easy and fun to look through. One of my favorite things about the Moosewood Cookbooks is that they are really focused on sharing healthy and easy recipes that anyone would enjoy, vegetarians and carnivores alike. When I read their recipes I feel like we have an understanding, that they cook like I cook. They have a ton of ingredients that are listed as optional and they give you different ideas for ingredient substitutes so you can cook according to your own taste or what you have on hand. I have even made some of the dishes and added meat from time to time. There is zero pretentiousness to this cookbook, it’s clearly been written with a lot of thought and love.
I have tried a bunch of recipes from Moosewood Celebrates over the years but three of my favorites have been the Maple Pumpkin Pie, Pumpkin and Mushroom Lasagna and I loved the Lime Frozen Yogurt, I make my own frozen yogurts because of trying their’s first. I find myself looking at it more often around the holidays but they have really great ideas for all year around. I hope you have a chance to check this book out and give some of their recipes a go on your own, you won’t regret it.
