I couldn’t believe how easy it was to make homemade vanilla extract when I first read about it. I bake so often I figured it was probably a good idea to give it a go and I can’t see any reason why I would ever buy the pre-made stuff again. I always have one in the kitchen window and one that is ready to be used in the cupboard so I can rotate the bottles, once I finish one I start another and open the one that has been sitting in the window. You can make as much or as little as you like at a time and it makes a really nice gift to give someone that you know loves to bake. I use it for almost everything I bake like cookies or brownies, almost anything sweet. You can also use it to make your house smell amazing with this little trick from www.lifehacker.com.
Homemade Vanilla Extract
- 200 ML Vodka
- 3 Whole Vanilla Beans (Split and Cut in Half)
Cut Vanilla Beans in half and then split them down the middle. Place the cut beans into the bottle of vodka, close the lid, give it a shake and set in a window so you remember to give it a good shake once a day. It will be ready to use in about 30 days but it is best if you let it sit for at least 60. I always write the date on the back of the bottle with a black sharpie. The last photo below is only after two weeks, the extract will just keep getting darker the longer it sits. You can also add more vanilla beans to get a stronger flavor if you like.
