There are so many reasons to give yourself scalp treatments. If you have a dry or itchy scalp, if you treat your hair chemically, if you have experienced any type of hair loss or if you just want to detox and pamper yourself once in a while it’s a great idea. I do this more often in the fall and winter seasons when it’s colder and the change in weather really dries out my skin. The benefits of coconut oil seem endless, it does amazing things for your body in so many different ways. Many people claim that it actually stimulates new hair growth and helps prevent hair loss. I also make a Coconut Sugar Body Scrub that I use about once a week to keep my skin nourished and healthy, but you can do so much with it, not only is it great for skin care but it’s really nice to cook with, try popping popcorn in it your next movie night.
Coconut Oil Hair and Scalp Treatment
- 2-3 Tbl (depending on how much hair you have) Raw, Organic, Unrefined Coconut oil, Warmed to a liquid
- 3-4 Drops of Essential oil, I like to use Tea Tree or Rosemary (optional)
Warm the coconut oil to a liquid and then add the essential oil if you chose to use some. Get your hair and scalp wet with very warm water and towel dry it so it’s not dripping. Lean over your sink and distribute the oils all over your scalp and hair using your fingers to really work it into your skin and make sure you get everything, whole scalp, behind your ears and hair. Put your hair in a clip on top of your head and then wrap it up with a warm towel right out of the dryer or you can warm the towel with a hair dryer for a few minutes, the heat will help your hair and scalp absorb the oils, this would be the perfect time to use one of those old school salon stand hair dyers… Let it sit for at least 30 minutes but over night is best if you can figure out a way to get a good night’s sleep and not make a huge mess while doing it. I find I usually do these treatments when I have a morning at home and I am getting housework done and I end up letting it sit for 3-4 hours. After you have let it sit, get in the shower and wash your hair with a sulfate free shampoo like one from Nature’s Gate and no need to condition, the oils will make your hair soft and shiny. I do this anywhere between once a week in the fall and winter to once a month in the warmer seasons. This treatment is affordable and easy enough to do all winter and your skin and hair will thank you.
